Job Summary This is a customer service position that connects patrons to our services and collections, while striving to maintain a welcoming environment in the library. Primarily working at the information desks at the entrances, library assistants provide effective access to resources and collections. They provide exceptional patron service in-person, over the phone, and online, as well as facilitate the fulfillment of electronic and physical library resources. The position also plays a vital role in promoting responsible use of the library. Assistants help maintain a respectful environment by identifying and reporting behavior inconsistent with library policies in a professional manner. This position is intended as an entry level position, with the opportunity of advancement within five months of employment after demonstrating consistent and reliable job performance. For the Library to be able to appropriately monitor hours worked, part-time employees are generally asked to restrict their work with the University of Utah to Library employment only, unless an exception is granted. Responsibilities Greet and assist patrons with checking in/out library materials. Process holds, renewals, returns, and overdue fines. Help users locate books, journals, and other resources within the library. Provide library information and research assistance, including accessing electronic journals and research databases. Refer patrons to librarians and subject specialists. Answer questions regarding library policies, hours, and services. Perform all cashier functions related to circulation and the library store. Assist in opening and/or closing procedures of the library. Monitor study spaces and report behavioral issues. Enforce all library and University policies are being followed. Connect students to academic support services across campus including advising, tutoring, registrar, financial aid, and scholarship assistance. Responsible for reporting maintenance and infrastructure issues. Collect lost and found items from within the library. The duties and tasks included are representative of the position and not comprehensive. Duties may be added or removed in the best interest of the organization and its patrons. Minimum Qualifications Must be a current University of Utah student enrolled 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters. This position requires the successful completion of a criminal background check upon job offer.
