Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Student Success Advisor works as part of a growing team in the Office of Graduate Programs. Student Success Advisors offer program services to students, staff, and faculty that promote excellence in the student experience at UNCW and position them for success as they continue on their chosen career paths. Student Success Advisors work with diverse caseloads, including students who are on campus in a traditional model, at a distance, in a hybrid model, and students who are solely online. Additionally, this position collaborates with faculty advisors in every phase of the student life cycle. Student Success Advisors advise students on: various university and program resources, time management resources, and program benchmarks. With a campus mandatory advising model, Student Success Advisors works consistently with their assigned advisees, but also with prospective and continuing graduate students.
This position relies heavily on significant use of communication via phone, video conference, email, and other forms of communication. Our UNCW Student Success Advisors are excellent communicators, self-starters, quick learners, and are motivated by working in a collaborative environment. This position reports to the Director of Graduate Programs and works to develop and maintain a retention plan to keep students in the program(s) and on track through graduation. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Education, Counseling, Psychology, Student Affairs, or a closely related field, with three years of progressive experience in academic advising, student support services, or a comparable area; or a Master’s degree in Business, Education, Counseling, Psychology, Student Affairs, or a closely related discipline.
Experience utilizing a range of software applications and educational technologies, including Microsoft Office Suite, learning management systems, and other technology-enhanced delivery platforms.
This position may require irregular work hours, including occasional evenings and weekends. Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience Master’s degree with at least 3 years of related work experience in a university or college setting supporting advising, graduate school, student affairs, or other student-facing positions.
At least one year of experience working exclusively with an online student population and/or online advising model.
Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
Experience with, and a passion for, working with students from diverse backgrounds in both face-to-face and distance/online environments.
Knowledge of best practices and theoretical foundations in the field of adult learning, student development, supplemental instruction, advising, and student services, as well as all relevant federal, state, and local laws, university regulations, and programs/policies required for compliance.
Experience with the assessment of programs and services.
Required Certifications or Licensures N/A Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The Graduate Programs Office is responsible for overseeing the graduate programs within the Cameron School of Business: Master of Science in Accountancy; Master of Science in Computer Science & Information Systems; Online Corporate MBA; Online Executive MBA; International MBA; Master of Science in Business Analytics; Master of Science in Finance and Investment Management; Master of Science in Supply Chain Management. Additionally, they support our Business Foundations Certificate and Human Resource Management Certificate. The office processes applications for admission, provides general student support, and administers administrative support for events. It also hires and manages graduate assistants, handles fiscal administration for graduate program budgets, and oversees graduation processes.
