The Student Services Advisor III – First Year Advisor for the Full-Time MBA (FTMBA) Program plays a central leadership role in supporting the academic success and overall student experience of first-year MBA students, ensuring they receive consistent, proactive, and responsive support during their foundational year. The First Year Advisor works closely with students, faculty, program staff, academic departments, and University partners to implement academic policies, track academic performance, support student wellness, and foster a strong sense of belonging within the FTMBA community.
Key Responsibilities:
Academic Advising & Student Support
Provide individualized academic advising for first-year FTMBA students, including degree planning, registration, elective selection, petitions, and academic standing (Dean’s List, probation, special cases such as dual degrees or prior coursework).
Coordinate student services counseling and connect students to USC resources as needed (e.g., Student Health, Counseling & Mental Health, Campus Support & Intervention, EEO-TIX, Threat Assessment, Academic Integrity).
Monitor academic progress and maintain accurate records of advising interactions, petitions, and outcomes in collaboration with the Marshall Registrar’s Office.
Provide documentation for STEM OPT alumni support as requested.
Curriculum & Enrollment Management
Manage and execute all registration and enrollment activities for the FTMBA core curriculum, including issuing registration instructions and coordinating with academic departments and the Registrar.
Oversee administration of waiver and make-up exams for core classes, including communication of results, student advising, and updating degree progress records.
Verify prior coursework for credit consideration and update student records accordingly.
Track and report academic performance indicators such as probation, Dean’s List, P/NP grades, and student status changes.
Student Engagement & Experience
Lead first-year experience initiatives, including orientation, onboarding, and transitional programming, to support student success and community-building.
Serve as staff advisor for student government and other student-led programming that strengthens the first-year MBA experience.
Collaborate with program staff to enhance co-curricular opportunities that align with student development and wellness.
Contribute to front desk operations and coverage as a shared responsibility within the Full-Time MBA Program Office, serving as a professional and welcoming first point of contact for students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
Preferred Qualifications
Proven ability with assessment and analysis, budget control and development, conceptualization and design,
conflict resolution, counseling, creative writing and editing, curriculum development, and interpretation of policies.
Efficient communication skills and the ability to conduct interviews.
Understanding of applicable laws, policies and principles.
Proven leadership ability and the ability to network, organize and plan.
Experience with problem identification and resolution project management, public speaking, scheduling, statistical
analysis and teaching and training.
Demonstrable commitment to professionalism and customer focus.
Demonstrable ability to take initiative and work independently.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree; Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
Minimum Experience: 5 years
Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly related experience in leading the delivery of student services.
