I. Position Purpose: The nature center is open during most business hours, with some
evenings and weekend work hours possible. The focus of the work study position is to
care for, feed, clean and handle the animals under human care. There will be extensive
supervision and training with certain kinds of animals that must be completed in order to
maintain this position. Housekeeping and grounds work, and helping with visitations,
classroom activities, educational programming, the gift store and ongoing projects will be
included in work requirements. Students must demonstrate they are trustworthy and can
work unsupervised on certain tasks.
II. Duties and Responsibilities:
• Handle live animals including, but not limited to mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians.
• Collect local herps and aquatic animals.
• Care, cleaning and feeding of live animals.
• Assist with programs and Nature Center visitation.
• Coordinate with the nature center director.
• Assist in custodial, grounds, and maintenance work, including but not limited to weed eating, usage of power
tools, upkeep of gardens, etc.
• Answer phones, take messages, in a helpful manner.
• Assist in gift store management and maintenance for both sites.
III. Qualifications - Education, Experience, and Skills
• Must be willing to work outdoors and with live animals.
• Must be willing to work in extreme weather conditions such as heat, rain, and
wind
• Good academic standing with a minimum 2.0 GPA.
• Background or interest in some aspects of Natural Resources.
• Strong communication skills with adults, young adults and children.
• Able to assist with educational programs.
• Able to work independently.
• Flexible, energetic, sense of humor.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver's license preferred
