Description/Job Summary
The Retention Counselor plays a vital role in advancing the mission of the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program by supporting the retention, academic success, and graduation of program participants. This position is essential to achieving the federally mandated objectives of the SSS grant and ensuring compliance with U.S. Department of Education regulations. The Retention Counselor will design, coordinate, and implement high-quality support services to increase the retention, graduation, and transfer success rates of 230 first-generation, low-income, and/or disabled students. These services include academic advising, personal development, financial literacy education, and cultural enrichment activities. Through holistic, student-centered support and collaboration with college departments, the Retention Counselor helps students overcome barriers and achieve their academic and personal goals.
Responsibilities/Duties
Assist with marketing, recruitment, and selection of 230 eligible program participants.
Initiate contact with new program participants within the first week of enrollment and maintain regular monthly contact; document all interactions and student needs in Blumen.
Use a strength-based approach to build rapport, foster student motivation and engagement, and enhance a sense of belonging.
Collaborate with students to develop and monitor Individual Action Plans that support academic achievement and timely graduation.
Provide academic advising and assist students in clarifying career pathways; create and maintain academic plans using Degree Works.
Assist undecided students with pathway and career development resources and assessments to support informed academic and career planning.
Facilitate student participation in academic, cultural, and enrichment activities that promote persistence and personal development.
Demonstrated understanding of academic success strategies, retention programming, and student development.
Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
Assist students in understanding and completing financial aid processes and support them in locating public and private scholarships.
Provide financial literacy resources and instruction to support students' financial wellness.
Track and monitor academic progress through midterm, semester, and year-end grades; provide retention, academic standing, and graduation data.
Identify at-risk students and implement timely interventions, document outcomes.
Support data collection and reporting requirements for the U.S. Department of Education and internal stakeholders.
Collaborate with other college departments and staff to ensure comprehensive student support.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
Experience : Three (3) years of academic advising or related student services' experience in higher education, which must include the following: Working with low-income, first-generation, or otherwise disadvantaged student populations.
Microsoft Office and student information systems.
Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in higher education, education, psychology, or related field of study from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
Previous experience working with Federal TRIO programs or other grant-funded academic support programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to work independently while also contributing to a collaborative team environment.
Ability to build positive, supportive relationships with students.
Knowledge of student development theory and best practices for retention and student success in a college/university setting
