General Description
The position is responsible in providing comprehensive advising services to OCCC concurrent and Early Start students. The K-12 Student Success Advisor will visit local high schools on a weekly basis and assist students in academic planning, aligning the college course schedule with the high school course schedule, resolving academic difficulties, addressing personal challenges, planning K-12 partnership events to take place during normal operating hours as well as in the evenings, and providing information about the College’s available support services & resources. Minimum (1) year full-time work experience in: academic advising at a regionally accredited college/university, OR counseling/teaching students in a high school setting Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge:
Knowledge and experience with digital platforms.
Microsoft Office Suite of programs (WORD, Excel, or similar software
Customer service principles

Sedentary work: The person in this position may occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, administration, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.
This position frequently requires the person to operate a computer and other office equipment to perform the essential functions of the position.
This position requires the person to frequently operate equipment that involves repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.
This position requires the person to frequently position self to access materials that may be above head or at ground level.
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.
This position performs the essential functions in an indoor office setting.
This position will require frequent local travel to and from high schools in the local area during normal operating hours and evenings for events. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree
(1) or more years full-time work experience in both: academic advising at a regionally accredited college/university AND counseling/teaching students in a high school setting
Bilingual (Spanish) – willing to translate and/or present Required Training Quarterly compliance training as assigned by institution

Working with MinorsAdvisor training Work Hours 40 hours per week when office is open, some weekends and additional evenings required.
General hours of operation for office:
Monday– Thursday 8 . – 6 .
Friday 8 . – 5 .
Staff schedule may vary within these hours based on the needs of the office.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement) One-on-one interaction with Early Start and concurrent high school students.
Find effective ways to assist each student with academic success.
Effective student planning that promotes retention, degree completion, and/or career planning.
Equip the high school students with the resources to succeed in OCCC K-12 programs.
Collaborate with high school counselors, administrators, and parents of students at assigned high schools to build a success team leading to student success and retention.
Frequently visit the local high schools to meet with students and HS staff one-on-one to discuss any barriers impeding success.
Intentionally develop academic and social goals during each advising session.
Introduce college academic resources and various study techniques.
Referrals to available resources that can help the student overcome personal challenges.
Work one-on-one with students to create an action plan to address any issue(s) impeding their success.
Work collaboratively with all areas of the campus to increase opportunities for student achievement and to help students remove barriers they may encounter along their path to program completion.
Educates students on future academic planning and registration.
Identify student-specific barriers to graduation, strategize how to help a student overcome these barriers and create measurable student-specific activities to support successful completion of their program leading to graduation.
Stay current with federal, state, and college financial aid regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance in delivery of services to students.
Effectively use interpersonal and communications skills including tact and diplomacy.
Review student satisfactory academic progress appeals, collect data about student’s academic performance, evaluate and make decisions pertaining to continued eligibility, notify the student, and update student’s electronic record.
Effectively use organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and follow through.
Exhibits self-awareness and builds rapport in an open, friendly, and accepting way.
Each semester, organize multiple enrollment and advisement events, requiring presentations to large audiences, at assigned high schools to take place during normal operating hours as well as in the evenings to allow for parent/guardian attendance.
Assist in orientations and K-12 Partnerships promotional events at assigned high schools to include presenting to large groups in person and online. Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.
Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.
Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.
Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation, shelter in place drills, and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
