Job Description: The International Student & Scholar Coordinator is a position in the Office of International Education & Student Services (OIESS). This position is part of a team, which advises the university community on student and scholar visa categories and policy related to BSU non-immigrant populations. The coordinator will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) primarily supporting the University's F student visa program. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with all requirements pertaining to international students, scholars, and their dependents at BSU as set forth by the Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, Social Security Administration, and other government agencies. The International Student & Scholar Coordinator reports to the Director of OIESS and works in close collaboration with the Office of Admissions, the Academic Advising Center, and Graduate Program Coordinators in support of BSU's international undergraduate, graduate and professional students and the University's J-1 scholars.
Responsibilities: Advises international students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional) and exchange visitors on all matters pertaining to their immigration status, related concerns, administrative and cultural issues. The responsibilities of the position include:
Coordination of all admission processes for international students and inbound exchange visitors;
Assist in processing and determining admission eligibility for international applicants, and exchange visitors through records evaluation and communication with applicants, faculty and other institutions as appropriate;
Determine admission eligibility;
Communicate with international students and exchange visitors regarding the status of their application and related issues;
Review admission processing, I20 reports, and DS-2019 reports on a daily basis to track application and admission processes;
Maintain institutional compliance for international students and exchange visitors;
Develop and implement processes, guidelines and policies in adherence with the federal immigration compliance regulations by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the University and the international students and exchange visitors;
Dedicated advisor for all international students, with emphasis on F and J visa holders in support of institutional priorities related to student success, retention and matriculation;
Serve as the Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO);
Serve as the liaison with government agencies, including the Student and Exchange Visitor program (SEVP), U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and U.S. Department of State; Support SEVIS compliance and immigration practices at Bowie State University;
Support students in F and J non-immigrant status in the areas of immigration regulations and SEVIS procedures related to training and employment;
Offer guidance to BSU's academic departments and key contacts on regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and International Office protocols;
Participate in processing and data collection required by SEVIS;
Advise students on Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT) , Academic Training (AT), program extensions and STEM extensions, among other functions;
Advise students regarding obtaining social security numbers, drivers licenses and other critical materials;
Provide counseling and advising support to international students and scholars on immigration and other ancillary matters and support cross-cultural programming;
Coordinate the application process and course enrollment for incoming visiting and exchange students and monitor their progress;
Work with other office staff, faculty and other constituents to deepen the culture of global engagement at the University;
Provide advising during assigned advising hours, scheduled appointments, and through timely response to correspondence from students, departments, and exchange partners:
Participate in Formal & Informal Outreach for the International Education & Student Services Office;
Actively recruit undergraduate transfer international students at community colleges to support undergraduate international student enrollment goals;
Develop understanding of other departmental procedures not directly related to this position to gain comprehensive understanding of the departments related to the students' admission processes;
Undertake additional duties as assigned.
Engage in Departmental Service by serving on assigned OIESS committees, working groups and task forces. Preparing and updating information materials. Represent OIESS as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree required in areas related to international education;
2-3 years of experience in international education and management of admission processes;
Must be U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident to meet regulatory requirements as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer.
Familiarity with both F-1 and J-1 students and related regulations;
Knowledge of SEVIS system; and
Willingness and ability to travel as needed, being a positive, collegial, and proactive representative of Bowie State University.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES : USCIS regulations and policies;
SEVIS-related processes and federal regulations and reporting requirements that apply to international students;
Experience as DSO or PDSO;
Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to be adaptable, dependable and handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing tasks and demands.
Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills required. Must have demonstrated ability in organizational management, time management, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated experience in effective communication that engages guests and employees around a shared vision. Must have an excellent customer service presence.
Experience with use of MS Office applications, especially Teams, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Experience in use of university student and personnel information systems.
Familiarity with FERPA regulations.
Solid organizational skills to maintain appropriate follow-up and records of activity.
Must be willing to travel to participate in professional meetings and conferences.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree
International experience studying and/or working abroad
Experience in working with underrepresented students to foster inclusion and access, or similar experience serving minority populations.
Experience using Terra Dotta Systems International Student and Scholar Services product
Proficiency in another language other than English
