Job Description
Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.
The Associate Director for Retention & Student Success Initiatives provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for programs and services that support Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) student success, belonging, engagement, and wellbeing. The role is central to advancing holistic student success, retention, and graduation, while fostering a positive student experience, sense of belonging, and promoting VPCC's Culture of Care.
Key responsibilities include supporting departmental assessment and strategic planning by designing and analyzing surveys and program evaluations, generating data-informed insights, and producing reports to guide the development of student support services, leading the college's care team, and leading interventions for based on student academic standing. The Associate Director collaborates with the Dean of Retention and Student Success to evaluate current retention efforts and recommend strategies and resources to improve student outcomes. This position plays a vital role in the development and implementation of a comprehensive retention plan that aligns institutional resources with retention goals.
Additionally, the Associate Director provides leadership and supervision of student-centered programs, including Student Life and Leadership, Great Expectations, Single Stop, and the Gator Pathway Success Coaching program.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Experience in program development and implementation.
Experience in providing supervision, training, and support to support staff.
Experience managing a budget.
Relevant multi-year work experience
Experience with outreach in student support and education services.
Knowledge Comprehensive understanding of the philosophy and role of student support services within the broader college mission.
In-depth knowledge of student development theory, student affairs programs, retention and student success best practices and student due process policies and procedures.
Awareness of current trends and issues in student affairs and student success.
Familiarity with state and federal legislation and regulatory issues affecting higher education, with the ability to monitor and respond to policy changes impacting students.
Commitment to the community college mission, teaching and learning, high academic standards, and student success.
Skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with individuals at all levels.
High attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and quality.
Advanced analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
Extensive experience in database management.
Strong project management skills, including planning, time management, and multitasking.
Ability to anticipate event challenges and respond calmly and effectively in crisis situations.

Availability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as needed.
Ability to attend and support events and activities both on and off campus.
