Description The Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success, Retention, and Persistence reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. This role provides leadership, advocacy, coordination, and recommendations for initiatives supporting student success and persistence at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University. The Assistant Vice President works closely with administrators and staff across various units involved in research and assessment of student retention initiatives and intervention opportunities to enhance student persistence toward graduation. Units reporting to this position include the Freshmen Academy, Associate Deans for Student Success, Tutorial Assistant Network, and the Quality Enhancement Plan.
Examples of Duties Duties and Responsibilities:
Serves as the university’s chief retention officer, providing leadership to ensure high-quality support programs and Student Success Centers for relevant student populations.
Collaborates broadly to promote student success across all undergraduate colleges and forges partnerships with key academic units to support these efforts.
Coordinates with campus partners to develop a five-year Student Success Plan aligned with institutional goals, including an iterative process for implementing new strategies.
Seeks funding and develops resources for future student success initiatives and programs.
Creates strategies and resources for students, focusing on relationships among student success, persistence, and advising functions.
Assesses activities aimed at improving retention, persistence, and graduation, supporting successful initiatives and discontinuing ineffective ones.
Oversees and assesses institutional reform efforts to improve student academic outcomes.
Collects and interprets data considering cultural and socio-economic differences among learners to identify support needs, utilizing performance indicators to analyze success.
Develops and enhances services for transfer students and expands programs for at-risk students, including first-generation, Pell recipients, and students on academic notice or probation.
Typical Qualifications Doctorate or terminal degree with at least seven years of progressively responsible administrative experience in higher education advisement, programming, and retention initiatives.
Effective communication and leadership skills to work with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external educational agencies.
Strong interpersonal skills, resource management abilities, and delegation capabilities.
Knowledge of university policies related to academic program development and experience managing educational support programs.
Ability to supervise staff, resolve problems creatively, and communicate effectively in writing and orally.
Supplemental Information Essential Functions:
Serves as liaison with the Division of Student Affairs, Deans and Chairs, Accounts Payable, and others to ensure efficient student enrollment processes.
Represents the Division of Academic Affairs on external and internal committees related to enrollment management.
