The Foundation engages partners to develop, execute, evaluate, and promote programs that build capacity to improve patient access to healthcare. Our programming is divided into 4 pillars: Adult Cancers, Pediatric Cancers and Blood Disorders, Neuropsychiatry, and Clinical Trials across the United States, Brazil, India, and 10 countries in Africa. The BMS Foundation is seeking a Summer Intern to primarily support the management of the US Adult Cancer Pillar with the opportunity to engage with other program teams as needed. The intern will contribute to strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, grantmaking operations, and communications; ultimately gaining exposure to the fields of corporate philanthropy and health equity. The Summer Internship will run June 1 – August 7, 2026. This position is considered a 20% hybrid role so you will be expected to report to our New York City office once per week. The starting hourly compensation for this assignment is within the range of $30.00 to $34.00/hr. Please note that the final individual compensation and any applicable benefits will be determined by your employer of record (and not BMS). Factors influencing this decision may include the characteristics of the assignment, such as demonstrated experience, required skill, and the geographic location of the job. Strategy and Planning Responsibilities Assist the development of plans, projects, and collaborative partnerships that advance the Foundation’s philanthropic goals.
Conduct research to provide competitive intelligence and input informing strategic grant-making initiatives and signature programs.
Stakeholder Management (internal and external) Responsibilities Support the building and maintenance of effective partnerships with key non-profits, government agencies, fellow funders, policy makers and leaders from academia who are engaged in delivering healthcare solutions to underserved populations in our select therapeutic areas.
Develop opportunities to engage BMS Company employees in Foundation programs and communicate the value of the Foundation to the business.
Operational Responsibilities Support effective grant making including comprehensive due diligence, ongoing monitoring and comprehensive measurement of the impact of our philanthropic investments.
Assist the Program Manager with grant making by reviewing and weighing in on proposals for funding, assisting with grant management by reviewing bi-annual program progress and expenditure reports, and participating in follow-up calls with grantees after report review.
Participate in project management across the range of program components to ensure optimal operation, impact and sustainability/legacy of corporate philanthropy initiatives and partnerships.
The main program components are: Formative research; Drafting and distributing request for proposals (RFPs), proposal logging; Communication with applicants and grantees; Grantee bi-annual reporting and monitoring & evaluations systems management; Managing large volumes of inquiries into the Foundation (solicited and unsolicited) and being responsive to all; Organizing annual grantee summit for all grant programs; Manage budget and resources to ensure that strategy and plans are delivered.
Communications Responsibilities Facilitate effective communications and engagement with key internal stakeholders across including Immuno-oncology leadership, Government Affairs, Corporate Responsibility, Corporate Affairs, and Legal teams. Support cross-functional collaboration to advance strategic initiatives and translate key insights into actionable communications and policy resources that support the Foundation’s broader objectives.
Draft senior-level briefings and deliverables such as concept notes, policy briefs, and presentation decks for internal or external stakeholders that report and analyze program progress in an engaging way.
Draft and review materials for Foundation board meetings at an executive summary level
Support communications of the innovations and impact of Foundation programs via PowerPoint presentations, written articles, social media postings etc.
Qualifications & Experience During the 2026 Summer Internship, you must be continuously enrolled in an advanced degree program in a health-related field such as MPA, MPP, MPH, MSW, MS, or PharmD with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Students graduating Spring 2026 or earlier are not eligible.
Preferred knowledge/interest in Oncology, Public Health, Public Policy, or Social Impact.
Preferred knowledge/interest in implementation science, health systems strengthening, operational and outcomes research with a strong focus on health equity and improving health outcomes.
