Position Overview
This position is in the Acquisitions & Resource Sharing department at Watson Library. We obtain resources/materials (books, journals, videos, PDFs, etc.) in any format (print & electronic) by purchasing, borrowing, or other means, needed by students, faculty, and staff to support informational and research needs. We also provide materials from KU’s collections to other libraries worldwide, as well as manage serials & electronic resources. Our student employees help open mail, locate books in the stacks, scan books/journals, and perform other office tasks.
Job Description
Duties include one or more of the following:
Opening incoming mail (books, media items, journal issues, etc.)
Checking-in library materials in various systems (ILLiad, Voyager)
Processing library materials (placing holds, checking out, labeling, routing)
Preparing borrowed material to be mailed back to lending libraries
Sorting and shelving journals in Watson periodicals location
Creating, editing, and maintaining library records
Retrieving print books and journals from KU’s collection
Scanning items for electronic delivery
Searching KU’s electronic journal subscriptions for requested materials
Performing statistical projects and running/verifying usage reports
Other duties as assigned
These duties require a high level of accuracy and speed, as well as the ability to quickly learn and retain detailed, time-sensitive, and complex procedures. The work must meet established quality and turnaround time standards.
Required Qualifications
Willingness to maintain an assigned work schedule, as evidenced in application materials
Availability to work at least 10 hours a week between 8 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday-Friday, in blocks of at least 1-2 hours
Preferred Qualifications
Library work experience
Demonstrated commitment to public service
Experience with computers, library catalogs, scanners, and software applications (e.g., Word, Adobe Acrobat, databases)
Knowledge of one or more Western European languages
Ability to work independently on complex tasks with little supervision
Ability to perform detailed work accurately
Problem-solving skills
Position Requirements
During the semester, student hourly employees must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours. For summer, enrollment or pre-enrollment in the upcoming fall semester in at least 6 hours, or summer session enrollment, or admission to fall studies, is required. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. Exceptions for GRA/GTA/GA do not apply.
Employment Conditions
Remote work is not available unless approved by leadership and HR.
This is a salaried/exempt position. A student cannot hold both an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt position concurrently.
