Patient Care Tech (C.N.A.) Student

The Patient Care Tech (C.N.A.) student learns how to accurately and compassionately act as a clinical support partner to assist the patient care team by performing various tasks and procedures as instructed by a licensed professional. Caregivers in this role will become skilled at basic patient care skills including toileting, bathing, linen and clothing changes, ambulating, comfort measures, and other patient care skills. Upon completion of an approved CNA program, will advance to a Patient Care Tech (PCT) or a Home Care Aide position at Intermountain. Students will be required to obtain C.N.A. certification within 150 days of being hired into the CNA Student role. The C.N.A. Student will attend a one-week course through Intermountain's partner CCNA and complete clinical rotations required to sit for the exam. The C.N.A. Student works a variety of shifts that may include weekends, holidays and nights and in various facilities, as needed.

*Must be able to work in Park City, Utah but travel to Murray, Utah for program training!

Essential Functions

  • The PCT student must be supervised during clinicals before obtaining a C.N.A. certificate.
  • Prioritize and deliver basic patient care, including toileting, bathing, linen and clothing changes, fresh water and ice, ambulating, comfort measures, and other patient needs, as well as assist with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients. Provides excellent customer service when responding to patient and family requests.
  • Reports and records patient care findings and data in a timely manner. Reports changes in the patient's condition quickly and secures qualified assistance as needed.
  • May perform telemetry duties as required based on the unit, and function as a patient care attendant by monitoring patients, addressing patient care needs, and collaborating with other members of the patient care team as required.
  • Transport medications from the delivery system to the RN as required when working on a clinical unit.
  • Collaborate and consult with the RN and other members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Performs non-nursing duties as delegated (e.g., cleaning, stocking, answering phones, clerical support, providing directions).
  • Implements plan of care as delegated.
  • Perform assigned duties within the scope of practice, including specialized procedures with skill validation and adherence to regulatory standards.
  • Fosters a safe environment by complying with the safety policy and taking appropriate action in an emergency.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The C.N.A. students will attend a one-week course through Intermountain Health's partner, CCNA of Murray, and complete clinical rotations required to sit for the exam.
  • Students must obtain C.N.A. certification within 150 days of being hired into the PCT Student role.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers is required but may be obtained as part of the C.N.A. student program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous healthcare experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
