Position Description:
Position Summary: The Part-Time Coordinator of the WCC Student Newspaper (WCCSN) is an administrative position that is responsible for overseeing the direction and management of the student-run (print and online) newspaper. The Coordinator works directly with student scholarship recipients and contracted student contributors to provide ongoing support, guidance, and post-publication recommendations. In addition, this position is expected to develop, maintain, and implement training materials and operating procedures. The Coordinator of the WCC Student Newspaper reports to the Director of Student Development and Activities.
This position does not produce or publish journalistic content. This position provides responsible guidance to student journalists in order to ensure the published works are consistent with Associated Press style, proper grammar, balance of content, accuracy, legal liability, adherence to the SPJ Code of Ethics, and alignment to WCC Board of Trustees Policy.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: · Oversee student scholarship recipients, student contributors, and the advertising sales team to ensure a professional (positive, respectful, responsible) learning environment for participants.· Ensure student scholarship recipient responsibilities are structured to ensure independent, accurate, accountable content decision-making, copy-editing, and fact-checking for all published works. Ensure consistent publishing.· Attend required weekly production meetings led by the student editor; oversee production process and progress.· Provide pre-publication guidance to student journalists (at student’s request) throughout each production cycle in the areas of team leadership, responsibility, procedure, and reporting; but do not participate in copy editing or required pre-review of student-newspaper content.· Complete a post-publication review of all newspaper and online content on a weekly basis to provide guidance to student journalists. Provide follow-up report to the Director.· Support the student editor to ensure all external concerns are addressed. Provide follow-up report to Director.· Maintain digital and print archives of published newspapers and web content.· Collaborate with department heads and faculty in journalism, photography, graphic arts, broadcast arts, web design, business and other relevant programs to promote WCCSN scholarship, student contributor, and advertising sales opportunities. Recruit students and provide recommendations for candidates.· Identify recognition opportunities, organize preparation and submission of content for conference awards.· Collaborate with students to develop advertising sales procedure, annual prices, and communications.· Organize a comprehensive individual student journalist training program at the start of each semester.· Coordinate one faculty/industry expert training session each fall and winter semester.· Organize fall and winter semester WCCSN Editorial Board Meetings; maintain agendas, minutes, and records.· Maintain records of operational procedures, community standards, major decisions, and editorial policy.· Coordinate with Technical Assistant: budget development/accounting, contributor contracts, advertising sales/revenues, equipment inventory, purchasing, newspaper printing, and circulation/distribution.· Coordinate marketing to ensure accurate and timely dissemination of information to students, staff, and faculty.· Adhere to the department’s budget development, program planning, and co-curricular assessment procedure.· Collaborate with Technical Assistant on budgeting, purchasing, and financial record-keeping.· Perform other duties as assigned by Director.Hours/Schedule:This is a 12-month appointment working a consistent weekday afternoon schedule (exact schedule to be discussed with candidate), with the flexibility to work Friday evenings for once-monthly production days. Twenty hours / week. Daytime chaperoning for travel up to once per year. Overnight travel chaperoning up to once per year. Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: · Associate’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.· Experience working for a professional newspaper as an editor or staff writer.· Equivalent of one year or more of full-time journalism industry experience.· Understanding of the Canons of Journalism/Society of Professional Journalist Code of Ethics and the importance of accurate and responsible journalism.· Excellent written skills, ability to write proposals and keep excellent records.· Intermediate knowledge of online media, graphic design, and video technologies.· Must be detail-oriented, and a self-starter with the ability to think ahead and plan in advance.· Must be highly motivated and have the ability to work independently.· Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and deal with interruptions.· Excellent communication skills and ability to work with a wide range of people including faculty, students, administrators, external businesses, corporations, and other agen Preferred Qualifications: Additional Preferred Qualifications: · Equivalent of one year or more of full-time work experience supervising or advising students.· Equivalent of three years or more of full-time journalism industry experience.· Experience managing a business operation, including activity planning, budget planning, and supervision.· Experience and knowledge of sales and advertising.· Experience in digital media.· Community College experience.
