Overview Hiring Department Student Affairs - MU Student Health Center The Medical Director of the Student Health Center (SHC) is responsible for overseeing the care provided by the medical staff to the University of Missouri’s student population. This leadership role ensures the delivery of high-quality healthcare, manages medical staff, and works collaboratively with other departments to support the overall health and well-being of Mizzou students. The Medical Director, as part of the SHC Leadership Team, will also work collaboratively with other internal team members to develop policies, processes, lead and co-lead clinical initiatives, and provide guidance on health-related issues affecting students and the university community.
Key Responsibilities
Medical Staff Oversight
Provide direct medical care to presenting patients and students, including diagnosis, treatment, and management of health conditions.
Supervise and ensure a high quality of care is delivered by SHC medical staff, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and contracted healthcare providers such as Attending Psychiatrists and Residents.
Oversees compliance with immunization requirements for the general student population and students in health-related programs.
Provides medical oversight of the immunization area.
Work with billing staff to provide clinical education on appropriate charting to ensure full revenue potential from our commercial payors.
Collaborate with SHC leadership to establish and maintain clinical protocols, guidelines, policies, processes, and procedures in accordance with standards of care, university policies, and legal requirements.
Coordinate with MU Counseling Center, Wellness Resource Center, and other campus resources to address holistic health and well-being needs of students.
Leadership, Supervision, and Management
Lead and manage a team of physicians, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare providers, ensuring staffing, training, and professional development.
Coordinate and oversee medical staff scheduling to maximize student access to healthcare services.
Promote and oversee the use of health technology (EHR, telehealth, AI, health informatics) to enhance care delivery and student engagement.
Provide oversight of CLIA waived lab including Provider Performed Microscopy.
Participate in Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and Risk management programs.
Support professional development and mentorship of emerging healthcare leaders within SHC.
Administer comprehensive performance evaluations per university policies and SHC standards.
Foster a positive, collaborative environment and model professional, caring behaviors.
Address and mediate conflicts within the clinical team per university policies.
Coordinate continuing medical education (CME) opportunities for staff.
Serve as a liaison between SHC, MU Health Care, and university administration as assigned.
Strategic Planning and Program Development
Develop disease prevention and public health programs aligned with institutional health objectives and guidelines from public health authorities.
Contribute to SHC strategic planning, including expansion of services and adoption of new technologies.
Assist in annual budgeting and resource utilization strategies.
Stay current on public health issues relevant to college students and report as needed.
Serve as a medical advisor in emergency preparedness and response planning.
Policy Development and Compliance
Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations (HIPAA, FERPA, insurance laws) and SHC policies.
Maintain knowledge of healthcare regulations, insurance, and accreditation standards for student health centers.
Help author and maintain written policies in SHC’s document management system.
Collaborate to ensure ongoing compliance with AAAHC or other accrediting bodies.
Collaboration and Advocacy
Collaborate with campus leadership and professionals across centers and departments to address student health needs.
Contribute to health and well-being related committees and campus initiatives.
Education and Outreach
Develop and deliver educational programs and clinical experiences for students, residents, faculty, staff, and campus community.
Oversee teaching programs in clinical services and provide training opportunities for health professions students.
Engage with campus entities and student groups on health and well-being issues.

Working Conditions
Typical outpatient family practice and clinical environment with occasional evening and weekend hours.
Occasional travel for professional development or university events.
Occasional participation in after-hours events to support student health.
Physical Requirements
Provide clinical care with full licensure and approved credentials.
Occasional lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Director of the MU Student Health Center.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
State of Missouri medical license or ability to obtain one.
DEA and Missouri BNDD or ability to obtain upon hire.
Board certification in a primary care discipline (Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics) relevant to college students' health.
Preferred Qualifications
At least 5 years of direct outpatient care experience.
At least 3 years supervising licensed and board-certified physicians in a direct patient care setting.
Strong knowledge of college student health issues including mental health, sexual health, preventive care, travel medicine, and chronic disease management.
Experience with healthcare administration, HR, risk management, QA, and budgeting.
Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and engage with student populations; public health officer experience is a plus.
Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
