Norwich University, the country's oldest and only private Senior Military College, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Commandant/Vice President for Student Affairs (C/VPSA). Norwich seeks an experienced and innovative individual who will embrace and help fulfill the Norwich mission: To give our youth an education that shall be American in character - to enable them to act as well as to think - to execute as well as to conceive - "to tolerate all opinions when reason is left free to combat them" - to make moral, patriotic, efficient, and useful citizens, and to qualify them for all those high responsibilities resting upon a citizen of this free republic. In accordance with this mission, the C/VPSA oversees wide-ranging services, policies, and procedures that govern and enhance cadet and civilian student life while developing and delivering programs that develop character, leadership, and healthy living amongst the students. The C/VPSA also leads the campus activities that provide for the housing, morale, discipline, recreation, and welfare of all students, while simultaneously maintaining the traditions and history of the Corps of Cadets. As a member of the President's cabinet, the C/VPSA collaborates with all elements of the University to assist with long range University planning, budget development, and communications. The C/VPSA also serves as the liaison to the Board of Trustees Student Affairs Committee. The C/VPSA is required to live on campus at Garrison House and is expected to take office no later than June 15, 2026. Essential Functions: Prepares students to graduate from Norwich University with the character, competence, and commitment to build and lead teams that thrive in complex environments. Directs all facets of Student Affairs operations, ensuring compliance with University policies and regulations, and state and federal laws. Oversees all Student Affairs functions to include student life, the honor system, student discipline, remediation and development programs, civic engagement, wellness programs, and student health. Establishes and implements short- and long-range Student Affairs goals, plans, policies, and operating procedures Monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness and leads changes required for improvement. Administers processes associated with individual student standing including promotions and non-academic probations, suspensions, and dismissals. Coordinates with the Office of the Provost and academic support agencies to support and enable student success. Leads Student Affairs personnel to ensure proper work allocation, training, promotion, enforcement of internal controls, and conflict resolution. Develops and manages annual budgets for Student Affairs. Administers Student Affairs vendor contracts in coordination with the Chief Financial Officer. Represents Norwich University at community meetings, committees, and task forces, promoting Norwich programs and policies. Acts as a liaison to the Board of Trustees Student Affairs Committee. Coordinates with other cabinet departments in the development and execution of communications plans relevant to prospective and returning students Ensures staff supervisory presence on campus during off-duty hours and during significant events such as Homecoming, the Regimental Ball, Recognition, and the Junior Ring Ceremonies Collaborates with ROTC units regarding policies and activities affecting student life Coordinates with the Department of Athletics to ensure students are able to participate in athletics while maintaining the obligations of cadet and student leadership positions Implements and maintains programs that develop character and leadership for the Corps of Cadets and other interested students Provides instruction that supports and encourages ethical decision making and honorable living Assesses the performance of direct reports and subordinate employees and provides frequent feedback to optimize their performance and grow their potential Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information Communicates with a range of audiences including students, parents, staff, faculty, alums, and the community in a clear and respectful manner Uses computers and other university information systems hardware and software proficiently Acts as the Student Affairs representative when the Incident Command Team is activated Performs other tasks as assigned by the University President
Requirements:
Desired Experience and Attributes Undergraduate degree required, graduate degree preferred Honorable military experience required, command experience at O-6 level or higher preferred Experience in student affairs or related higher education field Familiar with applicable Higher Education and Student Affairs regulations and best practices Recent experience in character and leadership development A clear and confident writer and speaker Capable of and willing to host regular events with students, employees, alums, and community members at Garrison House Able to identify, attract, evaluate, motivate, develop, and retain high caliber staff Able to participate in cadet physical training Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time and to attend evening and weekend events Physical and Environmental Standards Able to sit, stand, kneel, squat, reach, push, pull, and use hands and fingers to manipulate work related equipment; travel outdoors to all parts of the campus; lift 20 pounds Indoor work at a desk and computer; low level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes Outdoor physical work during period of very high and very low temperature and during precipitation Must be prepared to work non-standard hour as required by student needs, the university schedule, and special events
