Career Center Student Assistant, Clarion Campus

This position is at the Clarion Campus in 419 Becht Hall. It is not remote work. Student assistants generally work 8-10 hours per week between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (Monday through Friday) during the academic year. Class schedules are taken into consideration when developing the schedule. You may be asked to be available for one weekend event per semester, such as an admission visit day/open house event.
General Responsibilities:
As paraprofessional staff, student assistants are selected and trained to assist professional staff with the delivery of in person and online career programs and services to their peers. They help with daily office operations, assist the professional staff and clerical staff, and may serve employers who use our services. Student assistants assist with the following responsibilities:
· Greet and assist clients, including students, alumni, employers, and University staff
· Answer the phones; transfer calls and/or take accurate messages
· Type correspondence and/or enter data into a computer
· Assist in responding to emails from assigned office accounts
· Run errands and deliver materials to other campus offices
· Make photocopies
· Help students with account initiation for Handshake, the career management platform
· Enter coaching notes and event attendance into Handshake
· Assist with career presentations for classes, student organizations, residents, and/or prospective students/parents
· Staff information tables to promote services and programs
Special Tasks for which training will be provided:
Resumé Resources: Provide resources to your peers on how to write a resumé and support professional staff with a basic resume formatting review following a checklist and standard responses.
Handshake: Assist students with how to create a Handshake account to find events and jobs.
Internship/Job Search: Show peers how to find part-time jobs on Handshake and direct them to internship resources
Major/Career Exploration: Show peers how to find Focus2 on the career website.
Specialized Programming: Present basic information to your peers on select career planning topics
Events: Assist professional and clerical staff with the planning and preparation for career events, employer information tables and seminars
Professional Clothing Close t: Assist with sorting, racking, distribution and tracking of donated career clothing.
General Requirements:
Any major may apply. Strong consideration will be given to candidates who possess an overall high school or college GPA of 3.0 or higher. Student assistants must maintain good academic standing. Preference will be given to applicants who can provide evidence of all or most of the following qualifications:
Proven organizational skills and strong attention to detail
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated customer service/helping skills and experience working with the public
Interpersonal skills and a positive attitude
Telephone skills
Familiarity with computer applications, such as Microsoft, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Initiative, reliable, responsible, and dependable
Available to work both fall and spring semesters during an academic year, based on the needs of the Career Center
Available to work on Fridays
Upon hiring offer; obtain Child Abuse, Criminal History, and FBI Background Checks
Required Training:
All student assistants working in the Career Center must participate in the following paid trainings:
Observation and hands-on experience
Weekly group staff meeting and/or individual meetings with professional staff
Special training programs held throughout the academic year
All University mandated trainings on an annual basis
Note: Trainings may be held outside of normal business hours such as evenings/weekends/before the semester
Expectations:
Student assistants working in the Career Center are expected to:
Maintain good academic standing
Attend weekly staff meetings, mandatory meetings or training programs
Become knowledgeable regarding office operations, policies, and procedures
Keep abreast of new information which affects daily operations
Act in a professional manner when interacting with our customers (e.g., students, alumni, employers)
Maintain the confidentiality of any information obtained while on the job (FERPA).
Dress neatly when reporting to work. Wear business casual attire at programs or events. Short shorts, sweats, ripped jeans, logo t-shirts, and hats are prohibited.
Report to work on time and stay for your entire shift
Adhere to the work hours assigned, and make requests in advance if an exceptional situation requires a shift change
Complete all tasks as assigned and be willing to be flexible
Work on office business (not personal projects) during work time
Log completed daily tasks and submit work hours on e-time before the close of each work shift
Use the office technology/equipment for office business only
Be available for occasional evening or weekend events, including but not limited to job fairs, events and workshops
Refrain from cell phone use, wearing earphones/headphones, and personal media devices use during work shift
Consume meals outside of work shift
Wear office name badge at events and during work shift

Applicants may be required to interview with a member of the professional staff and present a short presentation on a career topic of their choice or demonstrate experience in a special project/assignment area.
