Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Division of Student Affairs fosters student growth and development. The Division of Student Affairs aids, directs and informs students about services and programs that will expand students’ educational experiences and prepare them for diverse lives in local and global communities. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside the classroom/off campus aspects of student life at ECSU , including student engagement and leadership; career services; student disability services, residential life; student activities; community standards; special programs and services; student health & counseling services and career services.
Description of Work
The Associate Dean of Students is a resource, advocate, and liaison for a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, parents/families, and community partners that support and contribute to student resiliency and success at Elizabeth City State University. This position oversees the management and operations of the university’s Office of Community Standards and supports campus-wide programming, and events related to critical student support. The Associate Dean of Student Development is responsible for administering the Student Conduct process, and collaborating on complex case management. This position is highly collaborative and plays an active role in non-clinical behavior modification, ethics, and decision making-model implementation, as well as implementing both long and short-term response plans. This position stands in on behalf of the Dean of Student, as needed, for emergency fund management, guidance for CARE team activities, and the Student Affairs on-call student crisis/emergency team and is designated as a Campus Security Authority and Responsible Employee. This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor/ Dean of Students, works collaboratively with the Assistant Dean of Communal Engagement, providing coaching on complex case management and targeted student success programming.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
* Possess the ability to articulate the role that community standards and student conduct have in supporting retention and the overall academic mission of the university.
* Demonstrated experience with training and teaching young adults and non-traditional students; experience with program and leadership-skill development, preferred. This includes preference for those who have trained graduate assistants and other para-professionals.
* Possess the ability to understand the University environment, work collaboratively on and off-campus partners, and build and sustain relationships with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, parents/ families, and community partners to address a wide array of situations.
Possess the ability to navigate sensitive situations with diplomacy while exercising excellent judgment that is congruent with federal, state, and university policy.
Possess current knowledge and experience applying best practices and appropriate legal/procedural regulations related to addressing students of concern.
* Possess superior critical thinking, organization, and oral and written communication skills with the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
Possess knowledge of the FERPA , HIPPA , Title II, Title IX, VAWA , and other applicable federal/state guidelines and laws that affect the practice of student support and advocacy that may influence community standard outcomes.
Demonstrate innovation in serving similar communities as that served by Elizabeth City State University and that of the Elizabeth City community.
* Working knowledge of Maxient, Advocate software or similar enterprise systems preferred.
Minimum Training and Experience
A master’s degree in related field required. Experience in assisting students in resolving conflicts, or previous experience work in restorative education/restorative justice, or work within the judicial system, student conduct, or overseeing a student appeals/complaint process. Preference will for professionals with higher education leadership experience. Knowledge and familiarity in Title IX, FERPA , Clery and other key compliance issues, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
Management Preferences
Preference will be given to candidates with related experience in student accountability and holistic retention practices.
