The Assistant Director, Student Services in the International Services and Engagement Office (ISEO) supervises, coordinates, and implements the day-to-day activities of the Student Services unit, serving nearly 11,000 international students (graduate, undergraduate, and non-degree) and their dependents at the main campus and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Responsibilities
Lead a team of advisors to meet the unit's goals of policy interpretation and adherence regarding USDHS, DOS, DOL, SSA, DMV, and various foreign government agencies and international organizations.
Independently evaluate, develop, and implement policies and procedures affecting international students at UC San Diego.
Supervise, hire, and coach international student advisors, administrative staff, and student assistants providing services and support across academic departments, graduate/professional schools, and Undergraduate Colleges, covering issues such as academic advising, outreach and recruitment, admissions, housing, financial aid, and immigration status.
Ensure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in alignment with departmental goals and objectives.
Serve as a subject matter expert to the Senior Director on issues affecting the academic, social, and emotional well-being and success of international students; oversee all aspects of student advising and provide analysis for administrative decisions.
Collaborate on policy development and monitoring for Student Services operations; provide liaison guidance to administrators, faculty, and staff on complex international student issues and recommend service enhancements.
Exercise leadership and discretionary authority to solve managerial and programmatic concerns, using independence, ingenuity, and analytical skills.
Represent ISEO and the Student Services unit on UC-wide and campus-wide committees and workgroups; align global initiatives with campus diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
Work a schedule that may include evenings, weekends, alternate work locations, and attendance at professional conferences (local, national, international, or virtual).
Qualifications
BA/BS degree and five (5) years of experience in an academic international student or scholar services office; or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Expert knowledge of federal regulations of DHS and DOS as they pertain to admission, enrollment, travel, and employment (B-1/2, F-1, J-1, L-2, H-1B, H-4).
Expert knowledge of complex and evolving regulations of DHS, DOS, SSA, DMV, and other agencies; strong experience with immigration-based software applications (ISSM or equivalent) and SEVIS.
Demonstrated experience in motivating and leading staff, instructing and directing work, and adjusting direction to meet operational needs.
Ability to monitor production and quality of work, provide feedback, counsel, and implement corrective action; experience with staff development and mentoring.
Project management skills and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines; ability to organize workload and set priorities.
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and university computer applications; ability to interpret and communicate complex policies to diverse audiences.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and problem identification and reasoning skills.
Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills with the ability to engage diverse students, staff, and external stakeholders; excellent written and verbal communication, including public speaking.
Proven ability to supervise professional staff, delegate tasks, monitor quality, and develop staff to their highest potential.
Excellent analytical skills to assess policies and advise stakeholders on requirements.
Special Conditions

US citizenship or US permanent resident status may be required for this position due to Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations.
This position is a mandated reporter under CANRA.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $71,600 - $127,400 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $34.29 - $61.02
Factors in determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, education, licensure and certifications, and other business needs. The Hiring Pay Scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range the University expects to pay for this position and may be broader based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements.
