: Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in the designated discipline/field of study to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may include a variety of formats: face to face, remote, and online. Adjunct faculty are employed to teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semester and/or up to 8 credit hours during summer session. Teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment.
Must reside within the DMV area, if selected.
Duties and Tasks:
Teach specific classes in the designated discipline.
Develop course syllabi and instructional materials.
Maintain records, assign grades, and assess student progress.
Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of NOVA and the VCCS.
Maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization.
Essential Functions:
As a part of the primary responsibility to provide quality instruction, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations. Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. Skilled in teaching and facilitation for large and small groups
Outstanding oral and written communication skills, to include the development of letters, memos, and course materials and the ability to present to large and small audiences
Ability to collaborate on the development, assessment and reporting of student learning outcomes and other assessment measures
Knowledge of, and skill in, computer usage including Microsoft Office, e-mail, student information systems, Learning Management Systems (CANVAS), Adobe Acrobat Reader, social media and use of the Internet to complete research. Knowledge of current pedagogy for providing instruction around college success skills
Ability to collect and report SLO and CLO data
Ability to understand, disseminate, interpret, and communicate College policies and regulations using approved and accepted processes and practices
Informed of current equity issues in community colleges
Ability to participate in annual and periodic professional development required for faculty in this discipline of Student Development.
Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in higher education, student development, counseling, psychology, social work, or human services OR a master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours of coursework in higher education, student development, counseling, psychology, social work, or human services, OR master’s degree in any field combined with teaching experience and/or training large groups in a secondary, postsecondary, or organizational environment.
Qualifying degrees and coursework must be awarded by and/or completed with a regionally accredited institution.
Additional Considerations Additional Considerations:
One to two years of experience providing academic advising, counseling, or coaching to college students or prospective college students.
Experience working with, and making referrals for, adolescents and adults in distress and an awareness of mental health issues commonly facing college students.
Experience researching a variety of community resources to holistically support students’ needs.
Experience working with individuals in the areas of student academic life management.
Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment.
Experience teaching students from diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency.
